YOUNGSTOWN — Suzanne Kathryn “Suzie” Summers, 83, died Tuesday morning June 22, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.
Suzie was born Dec. 9, 1937, in South Bend, Ind., the daughter of George and Dorthea Frame Summers. Due to an unfortunate automobile accident in 1940, both of her parents were killed and the three siblings were raised by their mother’s sister, Frances Frame Chandlee.
Suzanne graduated from James Whitcoms Riley High School. She earned her B.S. in education from Ball State University in 1960, and later earned her master’s in education in 1970 from Kent State University.
She started her teaching career in Columbus in 1960 with the Columbus Public School System at Mound Elementary. She moved to Youngstown in 1963, finishing her educational career in the Boardman Public School system at West Boulevard Elementary from 1963 until her retirement in 1997. During her tenure, she taught third grade, spent two years teaching remedial reading and helped set up the David Hatcher Memorial Library, before finishing as a first grade teacher.
In 1976, Suzie was instrumental in organizing the West Boulevard Children’s Chorus with music teacher, Oly Powell.
She spent many summers working with Camp Fire Girls on several residential camps. She also served several years on the board of directors of the Mahoning County Camp Fire Girls.
Suzie was very creative, enjoyed decorating for the holidays, was an avid reader, loved playing cards, visiting casinos and was known for her delicious chocolate cookies.
Suzie leaves behind her longtime friend and caregiver, Donna E. Kaufman; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She also leaves behind three special godchildren, Tyler, Mack and Alexis Mettille.
Suzie was preceded in death by her parents; Aunt Frances, who raised her; a brother, George Robert Summers; and sister, Linda Mae Summers Lamirand.
Suzie’s cremated remains will be laid to rest privately in Mansfield Memorial Cemetery.
