OBITUARY
Charles Robert Barnes, 94, of Crestline, passed away on October 7, 2021, at Mill Creek Nursing Home, in Galion.
Charlie was born in Rutherfordton, NC on August 11, 1927, to the late, John G. and Alma L. (Whitaker) Barnes. In 1947, he married the mother of his two children, Mary K. (Maust) Barnes. He then married Margery (Martin) Toth Barnes on April 4, 1970, and she preceded him in death on June 12, 1996.
Charlie graduated from Rutherfordton-Spindale High School, Class of 1945. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947. Charlie attended Georgia School of Technology and was employed by The American News Company from 1948 to 1957. He then was employed by Welsh News Agency in Mansfield from 1957 until his retirement in 1994. In 2001, Charlie was employed on a part time basis by the Schneider Funeral Home until 2012.
Charlie was a member of: First United Methodist Church, Crestline, Arcana Lodge #272, Crestline Chapter #88, Bucyrus Council #83, Mansfield Commandery #21, Baku Grotto, A.A.S.R., Valley of Columbus, Order of Eastern Star #43, A.M.D. of Mohican Council #134, Kentucky Colonels, Ohio Secretaries Association of Free and Accepted Masons, York Rite Secretaries Association of Ohio, Knight Masons of Crawford County, American Legion Post #488, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #859, Crestline, and the Crestline Historical Society.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Kathryn (Roger), Delaware, Ohio, and Jim "JG" (Sharon), Keedysville, MD; his stepchildren: Randy Toth, Crestline; Greg Toth, Crestline; seven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Flora Barnes, Dannie Martin; one niece, Karen L. Barnes Justus; one nephew, J. Ray Barnes; brother-in-law; Ronnie Bostic and daughter-in-law; Jan Buzard, and a very special friend, Joan M. Eichler.
In addition to his parents and spouse, Charlie was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Desi Vigil; stepson, Terry Toth, daughter-in-law, Fran Toth, brother, John Barnes, sisters-in-law; Marilyn Y. Love, Diane Bostic, Betty Martin; brothers-in-law, Larry Martin; David Martin, and John Martin, Jr.
Friends may call on Monday, October 11, 2021, from 2:00 PM- 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 223 West Main St., Crestline, where a Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 PM by the Galion Lodge #414 (Free & Accepted Mason). Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home in Crestline with Dr. Rick McCartney officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park where military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy and the Crestline-Galion Veteran's Military Funeral Detail.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Kidney Foundation in care of the funeral home.
