Frederick Gilbert Wiegand

September 29, 1950 - April 13, 2020

Fred Wiegand was a man who no one ever forgot they had met. His larger-than-life personality connected to all who encountered him and he left his mark throughout the Mansfield area.
Frederick Gilbert Wiegand, passed away on April 13, 2020, at the age of 69 years old, after an extended illness. He is at peace in heaven with his Lord. Fred was born September 29, 1950.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Susie; his two children, Kara (Timothy) Russell and Aaron (Jessica) Wiegand; and his four grandchildren, Grant, Samantha, Vance and Christopher. He is further survived by his brothers, Glay (Nancy) Wiegand and Daniel (Sharon) Wiegand; and his sister, Kathy (Sam) Poston. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Katherine Wiegand; and his Aunt Marvel Wiegand.
Fred was born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio, attending Mansfield Senior High School and The Ohio State University. Following his graduation from Ohio State, Fred began a long career in the construction industry. He worked for his father at GP Wiegand Construction in Mansfield prior to becoming Owner and President of the company himself. He became a licensed Professional Engineer in 1981. Through his years, Fred worked on many notable Mansfield landmarks including the Renaissance Theater, Oak Hill Cottage and OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital along with hundreds of businesses, manufacturers, schools and churches throughout North-Central Ohio.
Fred dedicated countless hours to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and Church Requel in Mansfield and his faith was central to his life of joy and happiness. He served on numerous organizations over his years, including Mansfield Rotary, Mansfield Southwest Little League, Mansfield Memorial Park and Boy Scouts of America.
When not leaving his mark on Mansfield, Fred loved exploring the United States. He and Susie traveled throughout the entire country, including a favorite spot in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. Fred could be counted on to have a fun fact at the ready for almost any place in the country and was never shy about sharing them with his travel partners.
Always ready with a joke, Fred could put anyone at ease with his joyous nature and a laugh that could fill any room. He was a dedicated family-man who was always at a school concert, play or baseball game. He loved playing with his grandchildren and bragged about them to anyone within earshot.
A celebration of life will be held by his family when it is proper to do so. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Little Buckeye Children’s Museum at https://www.littlebuckeye.org/donate or to Church Requel at www.churchrequel.org/give, choose designate, then Fred’s memorial for a food program to support the free meal program. This was a program that Fred worked tirelessly to establish and ensure it’s continued service to the community. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family.
