Obituary
MANSFIELD: Charlene Carol Blackstone was a determined and loving mother and grandmother. Dedicated to her family she lived out James 3:17, “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere”. Carol was all about her grandkids, and could always be found in the audience of their sports games and music performances. A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother Charlene Carol Blackstone passed away July 30, 2021 in her home.
Born August 4th, 1938 in Cleveland to William and Avalon (Austen) Pickworth, Carol was graduated from Mansfield High School in 1956. Carol was a member in the marching band as a majorette. It was at Senior High – on the football field – a senior, Roger Blackstone, called out a sophomore band member, Carol. He later apologized to her, and asked her on a date. The two married on September 14, 1957.
Carol worked for 28 years as the Human Resources Benefit Manager at MedCentral. She was a champion for the employees and battled for them to get the most out of their benefits. Even long after she worked there, the employees she assisted still recall how helpful she was. Once she retired, Carol became the treasurer of her church.
Carol was a member of the Lexington Church of the Cross. Not only was she the treasurer, but Carol also sang in the choir. Carol also was a member of the care team, in which she brought meals to the sick.
Much of Carol’s time was spent with her grandkids. She would have the granddaughters over for a week during the summer to spend precious time together. Carol always looked forward to her trips to Myrtle Beach. Nothing could stop her from those vacations, not even hurricanes. There is a newspaper article that features a picture of Carol lounging at the beach in the midst of the wreckage after a hurricane. Carol’s favorite hobby was knitting with a group that met every other week. They would make prayer shawls, and once Carol’s health began to fail, the group came to her place to knit.
Carol is survived by her children Cheryl (Jerry) France of Monclova, Bradley (Cathy) Blackstone of Westerville, Beth (Gary) Ferguson of Mansfield and Lisa (Shawn) McClain of Mansfield; grandchildren Nathan (Rachel) France, Kelly France, Jackson Blackstone, Ellie Blackstone, Brynn Blackstone, Dane Blackstone, Keefer Ferguson, Parker (Chelsi) Ferguson, Seth (Crystal) Ferguson, Caleb (Emily) McClain, and Megan McClain; great grandchildren Jacob McClain and Nora McClain; a brother Clifford Bumpus of Mansfield; sisters Sondra Zerby of Toledo and Lana Snyder of Bolivar; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Carol was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Karen Mercer and brother-in-laws Evan Mercer, Larry Zerby and Dick Snyder and a sister-in-law Jo-Ann Bumpus.
The Blackstone family will receive friends and family Thursday, August 5th, 2021 from 11 am to 1 pm at Lexington Church of the Cross. A service will follow, officiated by Rv. Ben Weisbrod. A private graveside internment will be held at Mansfield Memorial Park at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carol’s memory to the Endowment Fund of Lexington Church of the Cross and Hospice of North Central Ohio.
