Obituary
Shirley Jean (Jurliss) Williams Hobson, 91, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2025, at her home in Mansfield. She was born September 2, 1933, to the late Jacob and Florence (Delaney) Jurglewicz in Shelby. She graduated from Mansfield Senior High in 1951 and then Bryan College in 1957. She was also a graduate of Ashland College. Shirley accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1951 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She married James Williams in 1957. Shirley married Melvin Hobson on May 25, 2002. They were married for 271 months at the time of her passing and had traveled to South Dakota four times during their marriage.
Shirley went back to school later in life to get a teaching degree. She then taught at Woodville Elementary and Eastview Elementary in the Madison school district for 30 years. During those years she touched the lives of many students and teachers with her dedication and sense of humor. Her laugh lifted the spirits of those around her.
While teaching at Woodville she would bring her well trained dog, Scamper, to class and when a student was chosen to take Scamper for a walk it was an honor.
She was an active member of the teachers’ association at Madison (MLEA) and served as representative at the OEA conventions.
Shirley was a very good tennis player and played into her 80’s. She coached and taught girls’ tennis at Madison High School as an after-school sport.
In her younger years she enjoyed snowmobiling and riding Centaurs (three wheeled vehicles) and her driver’s license showed her qualified to drive Centaurs to this day. She also had two Honda motorcycles that she loved to ride.
Shirley had a great love for hummingbirds and dogs. She enjoyed tennis and played at Lakewood Racket Club in Lexington, Ohio. She was very good at tennis and had won awards playing.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Melvin Hobson; stepdaughter, Beth Hobson; stepson, Scott Hobson; and sister and brother-in-law Marilyn (Schwaner) and Jim Johnson of Black Hawk, SD.
Family and friends will gather for visitation at 98 South Diamond Street, Mansfield, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM. Shirley will be laid to rest at Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial Contributions can be made to Bryan College, 721 Bryan Dr, Dayton, TN 37321.
