Charles “Chuck” Vernon Eichar (or just “Grandpa” to the family) recently mentioned on his 96th birthday “the Lord must not be ready for me yet”, but on Wednesday March 10, 2022, the Lord had an appointment with him and that evening with his family surrounding him, he went to be with his Savior.
Chuck was born on February 1, 1926, as the son of William Finley and Ora Belle Eichar, of Wooster, Ohio, and brother to Robert Eichar and Clarence Eichar, all who have predeceased him. He met his bride (Betty Mae Imhoff) in January 1947 and on their first date he knew she was the one and asked her to marry him, but formally proposed two years later on the day of her high school graduation by putting a ring in her cap. They celebrated 71 years of marriage on June 10th and have lived in the area all their lives. They were blessed to have three sons: Randall L. (Laura) Eichar of Lexington, Terry L. (Ellen) Eichar of Bellville, and Brent W. (Suk Han) Eichar of Medina, which are so thankful to have had a father who valued family as a very high priority.
He was raised on a farm and valued the simple things in life. He thoroughly enjoyed gleaning a freshly harvested field of potatoes and was excited to show you the entire amount he had found. In the springtime he loved hunting morel mushrooms and would walk for hours to find those gems with his famous cane! One time in Michigan, with lifelong friends, he yelled when he spotted a whole group under a tree and before the vehicle could stop, he rolled out of the door to pick the choice morsels.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean War, he became a mail carrier and celebrated over thirty years in the profession. He loved to walk his postal route and talk to people, who only knew him as “Charlie.” He not only delivered their mail but would do acts of kindness for them such as cleaning windows and other odd jobs. He truly had a servant’s heart. Best known for his witty character, if you ever called their home and they weren’t there, you would be greeted by his recently recorded funny message on their answering machine.
He was so blessed to be called “Grandpa” by twelve (12) grandchildren and “Great-Grandpa” by twenty-four (24) great-grandchildren. The grandchildren and even some of the great-grandchildren have fond memories of his famous “hoot n’ holler” he would use at their ballgames and activities to cheer them on or acknowledge them. Several times other kids would say to the grandchildren “Who is making that noise?” and they would say “THAT’S MY GRANDPA,” treasured memories for a lifetime, a life well lived.
His favorite pastimes were working outside in the yard, mowing grass, and tending his garden. He was proud to tell you how to hoe away the weeds and show you his huge heads of cabbage. More recently he began playing a lot of the card game Euchre, he would always pick his favorite partner, his daughter-in-law’s.
He valued his personal relationship with Jesus and his church family, and was a member of Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church. His favorite song was “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” We are all so thankful for our memories with him and comforted that we will be reunited with him once again because of our faith in our Lord and Savior!
Visitation will be on Monday, March 14, 2022, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Werner-Gompf-Funeral Services, 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield, OH 44905. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church, 1905 N. Lexington-Springmill Road, Ontario, Ohio. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park, Ontario, OH
Chuck and Betty value Missions to further the Gospel, so have asked for “Memorial Contributions” to be made to Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church Mission Fund in lieu of flowers.
