Obituary
Mary Lou DeLong, 88, of Mansfield, passed away at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.
Mary was born on February 6, 1932 and was the daughter of Ora and Gladys (Dishong) DeLong. Mary grew up in the Mansfield area, and was a 1950 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School. She then attended Manchester College. Mary moved to Indiana to teach in 1962, and graduated from Indiana University in 1965. She was an elementary school teacher, teaching grades 1-3, for 33 years.
Mary had a heart for missionary work, and began in 1952 when she spent a year in Brethren Volunteer Service in Home Missions at Mt. Airy, North Carolina with the Church of the Brethren. During the summer of 1960, she spent it at an International Workcamp on the Island of Sardinia and in Germany with Brethren Service Church of the Brethren. She later went on two mission trips to the Orient and two to Africa with the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries. She worked with the United Methodist Church Volunteers in Mission summer workcamps at McCurdy School in New Mexico, a campsite in South Dakota, Jamaica, and Africa University in Zimbabwe, Africa.
She held leadership roles with the Tri Creek School Corp., The International Reading Association, Tri Kappa Sorority, and the United Methodist Church of Lowell, Indiana. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and held leadership roles at the local, district and conference levels. She attended the School of Christian Mission each summer and the Assembly held every four years faithfully.
She is survived by her sister, Donna Maxwell; and many nieces and nephews who loved her very much. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Kenneth DeLong, Dean DeLong, and Mervin DeLong; and her sister, Edith Augustine.
