Donald Edward Wyatt, age 92, died peacefully on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Liberty Nursing Center of Mansfield. He was blessed to be surrounded by his family.
Don was born in Cleveland on November 16, 1928, the son of Virgil Clair & Hannah Gwendolyn (Moyer) Wyatt. He was a 1948 graduate of Mansfield Senior High where he met fellow student Peggy Cole. The pair married on July 24, 1949, in Park Avenue Baptist Church—the sanctuary that would become their place of worship for almost 70 years. Don & Peggy were very active members at Park Avenue and Don held numerous leadership positions there including Elder and Deacon. He loved the Lord, he “walked-the-walk,” and he enjoyed private devotions with his wife every morning over coffee.
The pair settled in Mansfield where they raised three children. He was a wonderful dad who was very involved in his kid’s lives. Don always filled the needs of others and worked hard to provide for his family. He was in the banking industry in the Mansfield area for 40+ years; notably as the Jr. Vice President of First National/Key Bank (later First Knox) among others. He also worked nights at his father-in-law’s store by the hospital, Doc Cole’s. Don served two terms as the City Treasurer of Mansfield and volunteered many summers at Camp Green Conference Center—a Christian camp in Green Lake, WI. Don was the kind of man who was willing to do whatever was needed to be done.
Don thoroughly enjoyed the people in his life. He loved attending every sporting event and activity that featured his grandchildren. He would go fishing or camping with his friends who enjoyed it. Don was always ‘there’ for others and selflessly gave of his talents, energy, and especially his time.
More than 50 years ago, Don and his sister Pat began a Wyatt family tradition of visiting the ocean at Oak Island, NC every 3 years for a group vacation. They made some favorite memories on these beach trips and grew close as a family. While the Wyatt family looks forward to continuing this tradition… it won’t be the same without Don. He will be remembered for his kind and generous spirit and will be dearly missed by many.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Peggy Wyatt of Mansfield; children Steve (Jean) Wyatt of Fredericktown; Debbie (Dick) Snavely of Lexington, and David (Karen) Wyatt of Lexington; 7 grandchildren Megan (Brent) Shumaker, Bethany (Dustin) Roe, Greg (Stef) Wyatt, Kaleb (Amy) Snavely, Cole Snavely (Abbey Metz), Rachel (Antiwan) Corbin, and Kane (Alecia) Wyatt; 21 great-grandchildren Luke, Owen, Elise, Camille, Jack, Dave, Zoe, Cody (Mary), Alexis (April), Whitney, Ethan, Ava, T.J., Xavier, Cadance, Mahkai, Tyler, Alex, Brooklyn, Ari, and Maleia; 3 great-great-grandchildren Peyton, Rosie, and Malcolm; sister Pat Wilson of VA; sister-in-law Becky (Rich) Hanks; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Virgil & Gwen Wyatt and siblings Jack Wyatt, Jerry Wyatt, and Judy Hahn.
The Wyatt family will receive friends 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Snyder Funeral Homes (350 Marion Avenue in Mansfield). A funeral service celebrating Don’s life will begin at 11:00 AM officiated by Pastor Chris Thomas of Diamond Hills Baptist Church. Burial in Mansfield Memorial Park will follow the service. Contributions in Don’s memory may be made to Team 5:18 (PO Box 1807, Abita Springs, LA, 70420) or online at team518.org/donate
