Dale Thomas Hounshell, 82, of Mansfield, passed away Monday, September 15, 2014 in Dublin, OH at Emerald Crossings Memory Care Unit. Born December 31, 1931 in Cresaptown, MD, he was the son of Edgar and Edna (Weimer) Hounshell.
On April 6, 1958 he married Donna (Brandt) Hounshell who survives.
Dale graduated from Allegheny High School in Cumberland, MD in 1949 and Fairmont State University with a Bachelors of Science in Education in 1954. He went on to receive his Masters Degree in Administration from Bowling Green State University and began his teaching career at Madison High School. On December 9, 1954 Dale was drafted by the US Army to serve during the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharged on September 8, 1956. He returned to Madison High School as a history and physical education teacher as well as a coach. In 1960 Dale took a job in Oregon, OH as Dean of Boys at Eisenhower Junior High School. He moved back to the Mansfield area in 1963 where he was the principal at Lucas High School until 1969 and then Ontario Middle School principal and later the assistant superintendent until his retirement in 1990. Dale later received a letter of distinction from Fairmont St. University after 25 years by bringing honor to the school with his many accomplishments.
Dale loved golfing, once scoring a hole-in-one at Deer Ridge Golf Course, and made sure every Tuesday he was out on the course with his friends. The family would like to thank Dallas, Steve, and Don who always picked Dale up and made sure his was taken care of on those days. Dale also trained Standard Bred race horses and raced 2-3 year old horses at county fairs, Northfield Park, and Scioto Downs. He was a member of the US Golf Association,a lifelong member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church, and had many harness racing publications and teacher affiliations.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Emerald Crossings Memory Care Unit, the hospice staff, and many caregivers for their compassion and care of Dale at the end.
Besides his wife, Dale is survived by his children, William (Alison) Hounshell of Amelia, OH and Dale (Cara) Hounshell, Jr. of Dublin; grandchildren, Garrett (fiancee, Megan) Hounshell of Amelia, Austin Hounshell of Columbus, and Carter Hounshell of Amelia; brothers and sisters, Edgar (Billie) Hounshell of Frostburg, MD and Sonya Osbourne of Cresaptown, MD; sister-in-law, Marilyn Romano of Mansfield; brother-in-law, Charles (Carole) Brandt of Highland, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Irma Lee; brother, JG (Catherine) Hounshell; sister, Edna (Robert) Cessna; and brother-in-law, Joe Romano.
Friends may call Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd., Ontario. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, conducted by Chaplain Matt Olson. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
