Joseph "Joey" Mathew Thomas Jr. passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, October 3, 2021, at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 47.
He was born June 5, 1974, in Abilene, Texas, to Deborah and Joseph Matthew Thomas Sr. Joey graduated from Ontario High School in 1993 and had attended Columbus State Community College. He was a Yardmaster with CSX for 15 years.
Joey was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, retiring from the Air Force in November 2020. During his service from 2004-2020, he was stationed all over the world including: Haiti, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was awarded many commendations during his illustrious military career.
Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Deborah and Joseph Thomas Sr. of Mansfield; sisters, Tracy (Brett) Baxter of Ontario and Trisha (Bryan) Butera of Willoughby Hills; brother, Ryan (Mary) Thomas of Madison; eleven nieces and nephews, Bronx, Brooklyn, Bostn, Alli, Hunter, Emme, Chase, Elle, Mason, Maggie and Max; and his favorite little people, Vinney and Elijah.
To us, Joey will always be our tough guy with a heart of gold.
Family and friends are invited to Mansfield Memorial Park on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. for a graveside service. Military honors will be presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family.
