Obituary
MANSFIELD: Gerald “Jerry” Ling, 98, of Mansfield went to be with his Lord, Saturday, May 20, 2023 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.
The son of David and Dora Ling, Gerald was born April 7, 1925 in Mansfield and attended Springfield Township High School. He married the love of his life, the late Pauline Mowry on August 23, 1953.
He was employed by Shelby Business Forms and Wilkins Air Force Station in Shelby, Independent Towel Supply, and an assistant Fire Chief at Newark Air Force Station, where he retired after 24 years. He also worked at Musiks Service Station Maintenance, and Mansfield Raceway, along with many other jobs, and served as a Captain arson investigator and inspector at Washington Twp Fire Department and volunteer firefighter for 15 years.
Gerald served on D-Day in WWII and the Battle of the Bulge, with the Battery C 125th AAA Gun Battalion, 9th Air Force. He assisted in opening the Port of Antwerp, Belgium, where a monument now stands in the town square. He also served in the 164th Fighter Squadron at Mansfield Lahm Airport. His memberships include: American Legion, Moose Lodge, Amvets, Retman Club, AARP, and RSVP, Greater Ohio Showman’s Association.
He attended Berean Baptist Church. He enjoyed auto racing, bird watching and spending time with family.
He is survived by four children, Shari (Edward) Strobel of Bay View, Ohio, Vicki (Greg) Smith of Waco, Texas, Jeff Ling of Mansfield, and Perry Ling of Whitehall; three grandchildren Josiah Smith, Joy (Luke) Paulson, and Samuel Ling; two great grandchildren Eli and Cade Paulson; nephew Bob (Mariella) Frey, niece Marge Hobbs, numerous great nieces and great nephews; brother-in-law Roger Mowry and family; brother-in-law Dan Mauritz and family, and sister-in-law Judy Mowry and family.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and birth parents Raymond Ling and Erma Mae (Guthrie) Forshey, by four brothers, one sister, half brothers Richard “Gene” Ling and Bill (Cricket) Forshey; sister-in-law Sharon Mowry, sister-in-law Fran Mauritz, brother-in-law Carl Mowry, and nephew Bill Frey.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 26, 2023 from 10 am – 12 pm in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services celebrating the life of Gerald Ling will begin at 12 noon. Pastor Jim Berry will officiate. Burial with military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
