Obituary
January 16, 1968 - August 31, 2020
Joseph Matthew Meister died Monday August 31, 2020, as a result of injuries sustained in an accident. He was 52 years old. Joseph, known as Joe, was born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio in 1968 and moved to Florida in the mid-90s.
Joe was a dreamer, always looking for the big break around the corner. He was a quiet thinker, never talking much but could often be found with a soft smile as he pondered a simple joy, or muttering the words to a song he was working on. He was a talented artist who loved to draw and write poetry and songs. A self-taught musician, he played trumpet, guitar, piano and he sang. It seemed the world always made more sense when he had a guitar in his hands or was sitting at the piano. After the death of his twin sons, the music faded and the dreams changed, and Joe walked many miles in search of peace and answers to questions he didn’t know how to ask. The kindness of friends and strangers alike provided markers along the way, and the family is grateful for all those who helped Joe on his journey.
Joe was preceded in death by his twin infant sons, Mason and Nicholas, his father and step-mother James and Shirley Meister, and adoptive parents Ruben and Frances Sorg.
He is survived by his mother, Betty J. Warner of Mansfield; son, Jesse Meister of Florida; daughter, Brittany Van Hesteren of Ashland; brothers, Kim (Cheryl) Meister of Mansfield, James Meister of Reynoldsburg and Andrew (Rebecca) Sorg of Wilmington; sisters, Sarah (Mike) Piazza of Florida and Claudia Strong of Lexington. In addition, he is survived by step-siblings, Roberta (Jim) Prosser, Karl (Anna) Fry of Mansfield and Brady (Michele) Fry of Alabama. He became a grandfather to baby Leyland Meister shortly after the time of his passing.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday, September 18, 2020, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. Pastor Matthew Pond will officiate the memorial service that follows at 5:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park at a future date.
