Eugene "Gene" W. Simmons
February 12, 1936 - January 31, 2021
Eugene “Gene” W. Simmons of Mansfield passed away Friday, February 5, 2021, after an extended illness at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital at the age of 84. He was born August 9, 1936, in Hacker Valley, West Virginia, one of six children of the late Steve and Ida (Carpenter) Simmons.
He retired from General Motors after 35 years of service. Gene married Loretta June Robinson on February 1, 1958, and they enjoyed a wonderful life together. He was an active member of Lincoln Heights Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was the church handyman, a job that kept him busy fixing one situation or another on a regular basis. In his free time, Gene enjoyed golfing, fishing with his son, and working in his yard. To escape the weather in Ohio, he spent his winters in Myrtle Beach enjoying the abundant sunshine.
Gene is survived by his wife of 63 years, Loretta June Simmons; son, Rodney (Susan) Simmons of Mansfield; granddaughter, Sarah Simmons of Mansfield; sister, Retta Fisher of Mansfield; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Steven Simmons; three brothers, Arlie, Dempsey and Roy Simmons; and a sister, Thelma Anderson.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. The funeral service conducted by Pastor Mike Wilson will be held Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Lincoln Heights Baptist Church.
