Obituary
Raymond Eugene Cooper, age 83, of Mansfield, passed away early Friday morning, January 10, 2025, at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Born February 15, 1941, in Ashland, Ohio, he was one of six children of the late Arleigh and Mabel (Weltmer) Cooper. Ray graduated from Ashland High School and joined the US Navy, serving for two years. He worked for UPS as an auto mechanic for over 20 years.
On November 28, 1964, he married Betty Jo Love, and they created a wonderful life and family together. Ray loved his family and adored his grandchildren—playing Santa Claus every year for them. An avid car enthusiast, Ray enjoyed working on classic cars and attending car shows. He had a special appreciation for motorcycles. He collected coins and pocket knives, always looking for just the right item. Going to casinos allowed him to try out his luck.
Ray is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Jo Cooper; four sons, Duane Cooper, Kevin (Susan) Cooper, Christopher (Kathie) Cooper and Darren (Michaela) Cooper; five grandchildren, Colton, Brooke, Elizabeth, McKenzie and Jacob Cooper and step granddaughter, Amanda Shambre; a brother, Arleigh Cooper Jr.; a sister, Beverly Berry; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther McCormick, and Betty Anderson; and a brother, Kenneth Cooper.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Wappner Funeral Directors-Ontario, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service conducted by Rev. Eric Steward will follow at 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the NRA or DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
