Marjorie Roper Hood, aged 95, died on September 17, 2026, at Winchester Terrace Nursing Center in Mansfield, Ohio. Marjorie was born on Wednesday May 6, 1931, to Frank L. and Florence Brazelton Roper in New Market, Tennessee. While growing up in New Market, Marjorie was a member of St. Luke Presbyterian Church. Marjorie attended Cottage Hill County School, attended Nelson Merry High School, played the position of a “fierce” guard on the girls’ basketball team, graduating in 1949. She attended Swift Memorial Junior College in Rogersville, Tenneessee, graduating in 1951 with an associate’s degree.
She then moved to Mansfield, Ohio starting a new life journey, where she met, fell in love and married her husband Carey Hood, Jr. in 1952. To this 69-year union, they had three beautiful children, Elvin, Michael and Lesley. While taking care of her family, Marjorie worked as a teacher for Head Start, then later became a teacher’s aide at Hedges Elementary School and worked for M.O.I.C. as the Director of Child Care. In her spare time, she volunteered for various charities, was a member of the Green Briar Garden Club, the NAACP and was member of the Missionary Society while at Mitchell Chapel A.M.E. and Turner Chapel A.M.E. Churches.
In addition to her love for working with children, Marjorie also had love for music. She learned to play the piano very early in life, which led to learning to play the organ as well. Marjorie became the church organist for Mitchell Chapel A.M.E. Church and years later she became the organist for Turner Chapel A.M.E. Church of Crestline, Ohio. Marjorie accompanied many vocalists and choirs, participated in various events in churches, she even taught a few children to play the organ in the Mansfield community and continued to share her musical talent until the very end.
Marjorie is preceded in death by her husband Carey Hood, Jr., her parents, Sister Mildred Garrett, brothers Elvin Roper, Frank M. Roper, James Roper, William B. Roper Sr., Son Elvin E. Hood, Grandson Gabrial Hood.
Marjorie’s memory will be carried on by her son Michael Hood, his children Richard Carey Hood, and Karis Hood (Phillip) Pearson, their mother Carole L. Hood, Great Grandchildren RiNease Hood and Romero Hood, Daughter Lesley (Paul) Simpson, their children Kaleia Simpson, Jillian Simpson and Hailyn F. Marjorie Simpson, Sister Margaret J. Roper, sisters in law Dorothy J. Boyd and Lillie Hood, special neighbor and friend Dorothy J. Pinkston, longtime friend Evangelist Norma Bean and a host of nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and friends whom she loved and adored.
