Eva Lucile Smith
Mansfield - Eva Lucile Smith, age 99, of Mansfield, died peacefully on Wednesday July 21, 2021 at Country Meadow Nursing Center in Bellville following a short illness. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff at the Wound Clinic, Ohio Health Mansfield, Ohio Health Hospice and Country Meadow Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Willard A. Smith, her sisters Wilma Paulo and Leola Whitacre, and her parents Frank and Sadie Tinkey.
Eva is survived by her brother Earnest Tinkey of Mansfield and her two sons; Dr. James E. Smith (Phyllis) of Mansfield and Larry E. Smith (Elaine) of Hilliard; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Born in 1922 in Johnsville, Ohio, Eva's long lifetime of rich memories include growing up on a self-sufficient small family farm in a time when horses were still used to work the fields and her farmhouse was without electricity or indoor plumbing. She met Willard (Bill) Smith, her husband-to-be, at the Boose's Market in Mansfield and recalled, as a new bride, listening to the radio report of the attack on Pearl Harbor and traveling alone by bus to join her husband at his air base in Florida during WWII. In 1950 Bill and Eva had a small house built south of Mansfield in which Eva continued to live independently until just a few weeks before her death.
Eva enjoyed a 30 year career at the United Telephone Company (which became Sprint) in Mansfield and was loved by the ladies she supervised. Following her retirement, she worked another 18 years as a hostess for McDonald's in Mansfield. Eva and Bill were long-time members of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Mansfield. Eva loved watching the birds around her home and spent many hours enjoying them from her windows and cozy south porch. She participated for over 30 years as a feeder watcher in the Gorman Nature Center's Annual Christmas Bird Count.
The great, sustaining joy of Eva's life was lovingly mothering her two sons in which her unfailing thoughtfulness, selfless care, and deep devotion were of a rare depth that defies description. She gave us the priceless gift of a lifetime during which every interaction and conversation reinforced how much she loved us and how proud of us she was. We grieve now because Eva will never again be physically with us to share this life's joys and challenges… but rejoice in the knowledge of where she now is – free of this world's pains, and having accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, beginning her eternal Life with God in heaven. Through God's gracious gift of salvation through Christ, each of us can join her there someday.
Mom… never-ending, like waves upon the shore – so our love for you shall be.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at 1 pm at the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where her family will receive friends the hour prior, from 12 pm – 1 pm. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
