MANSFIELD: Danny Niles Phallen, age 86, of Mansfield, Ohio, died May 22, 2022 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. He was born on Christmas Day, 1935 near Galion, the son of Niles Phallen and Grace (Wittmer) Phallen. Dan married Susan Cook on February 23, 1957, at the First Christian Church in Mansfield. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include his wife Susan Phallen; daughters Pamela (Ken) Walczak of Granville, Ohio, and Cynthia Phallen of San Diego, son Steven (Lezli) Phallen of San Diego; four grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his infant son David Phallen, father Niles Phallen, mother Grace (Wittmer) Baker, stepfather Clarence Baker and sister Beverly Fike.
Dan graduated from Mansfield Senior High in 1953 and attended the University of Cincinnati, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Dan worked on the Wittmer farm as a boy and continued working on the family farm for many years on evenings and weekends. He worked at First National Bank as a teller and was promoted to Trust Officer. While at the bank, he developed relationships with many community leaders. After 16 years at the bank, Dan went to Food Franchises, Inc., then in 1983, he and two partners purchased the Long John Silvers restaurants from Food Franchises and went into business as Performance Food Corporation, owning 43 restaurants across 3 states. He retired at age 75 in 2011.
Dan was a member of First Christian Church, Hermits Club, Mansfield Elks #56, Mansfield Area YMCA. Danny was a member of the Mansfield Rotary Club for over 50 year where he received the Paul Harris Fellow. He also served on many nonprofit boards including The Renaissance Theater, Mansfield Memorial Homes, the local Johnny Appleseed Council of the Boy Scouts of America, where he earned the Silver Beaver Award and Sertoma. Dan was also an active volunteer at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary.
Dan and Sue always lived in Ontario near Mansfield. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, skiing and travelling, but his greatest joy was always his family.
His family will receive friends Wednesday, May 25, 2022, from 4-7 pm in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where his funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 am. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
