Obituary
MANSFIELD: Rollie Edgar Mitchell, age 93, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday evening August 31, 2010 in Lexington Court Care Center.
He was born March 25, 1917 in Mansfield, the son of James F. and Sophie (Klingenhagen) Mitchell and was graduated from Mansfield Senior High in 1935.
A U.S. Army veteran, Rollie served in World War II in the Persian Gulf, driving a truckload of fuel over the treacherous Himalayan Mountains.
His army service prepared him for a vocation behind the wheel. Rollie "kept on trucking" working as a driver and dispatcher for Dearman Transportation, retiring 1980 after more than 40 years of service. He then worked at Kingwood Center, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, gardening and golfing. Rollie was a man of integrity and honesty. He dearly loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a member of American Legion #16, Mansfield Retmans Club, Mansfield Men's Garden Club, the former Central United Methodist Church, and Lexington Senior Citizens Center.
He is survived by his wife Betty (Burkholder) Mitchell, whom he married October 19,1940; daughter and son-in-law Emily & Roger Bennett of Mansfield; son and daughter-in-law Lowell & Karen Mitchell of Orient; daughter-in-law Bonnie Mitchell of Butler; six grandchildren, Belinda Clark, Brad Mitchell, Brian Bennett, Brent Bennett, Maggie Setley and Miranda Mitchell; eight great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son Craig Mitchell, and six brothers.
The Mitchell family will receive friends Friday, September 3, 2010 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. His graveside funeral service will follow at 2 pm in Mansfield Memorial Park with The Rev. Carl Cunfer officiating. The Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Memorial contributions to MedCentral Hospice may be made at the funeral home.
