BELLVILLE: Max Eastman said “It is the ability to take a joke, not make one, that proves you have a sense of humor.” Always joking and teasing, Fred Stull loved to divvy out the jokes, but he was equally enthusiastic about being the recipient of one liners and practical jokes.
James Frederick “Fred” Stull passed away Saturday afternoon, April 24, 2021 in Brookdale Westlake with his family by his side. He was 80.
He was born December 27, 1940 in Mansfield to the late Harold and Maxime (Russell) Stull and was graduated from Springfield High School (now Ontario) in 1959. He attended Ohio University.
A U.S. Army veteran, Fred served in the reserves for six years and active duty for a short time.
He was introduced to Alwine Diener and at the end of their first date Alwine declared that she “didn’t like him” but she knew she was “gonna marry him.” And for over 50 years, she endured his jokes, knowing the teasing came with a special sweetness Fred reserved just for her.
Fred worked for over 40 years at Crane Plumbing as the plant engineer. He dedicated his time and talents as the company endured many changes over the years, a testament to his loyalty.
He was a long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellville where he served on the church council. He was a former member of Jaycees and served ten years as the Bellville Zoning Inspector.
Fred was blessed with many talents and interests. The fixer of broken things, he could make about anything with his hands. He loved taking on little projects, especially if they entailed a tool or gadget purchase. He enjoyed genealogy and making connections with family and friends, many he stayed in touch with over the years. Described as welcoming and generous, Fred wanted to be sure to include people, even if it meant inviting mere acquaintances to Christmas gatherings. All were welcome and treated as family. A helper of humanity, Fred found it difficult to accept help himself, as a self-reliant, sometimes stubborn kinda guy.
Most of all, he will be remembered for his orneriness. He loved to tease, joke or put everyone at ease with a quick one-liner. Even this week, as he was telling those most precious goodbye, he was able to bring a smile to those around him. Humor was his love language, and he would want everyone to laugh in honor of him today.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Alwine Stull of Bellville, daughters Lorie Stull of Boston, MA, and Lindsay and Paul Rados of Fairview Park; his little sunshine and granddaughter Amelia Kate Rados, honorary granddaughter Caroline Worner, a brother-in-law Paul and Lynette Diener of Raleigh, NC and their children Leslee, Stacee and Brooke, brother-in-law Mike Stoughton and his children Todd, Jennifer and Jeff.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by a sister-in-law Peggy Stoughton.
Friends may call Thursday, April 29, 2019 from 5-7 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. Social distance and mask guidelines will be observed. The memorial service will be held Friday at 11 am, with Rev. Debbie Pinnegar officiating. Interment will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. For guests unable to attend, the service will be live-streamed on the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home Facebook page: https://fb.me/e/2dLGaO1u0
