Obituary
Philip M. Ackerman, 81, of Mansfield, Ohio passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. He was born in Mansfield on May 24, 1940 to the late Philip and Verna (Moore) Ackerman.
Philip was a graduate of Madison High School class of 1958 and attended Defiance College. He joined the Madison Township Fire Department in 1971 and became Chief in 1972 serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1998. Enjoying his job as a fireman, he was also a fire instructor at Ohio Fire Academy and BGSU State Fire School. No matter if he was on the job or at home, Philip was known to be a great teacher and influenced many people. He was a licensed operator for ham radio; his call was N8PA. Philip loved and spoiled his animals. He also loved classic cars and trucks. He was an avid fan of motor sports racing and the Cleveland Indians. Philip was a life time member of the Mayflower Congregational Church and was very active within the church.
He is survived by his fiancé, Pat Robertson; son, Steve Ackerman; daughter, Lisa Coover; grandchildren, Adrian (Shaun Whisler) Ackerman, Amber (Zacq Dickinson) Ackerman, Tyler (Rebecca) Ackerman, Ciarah Ackerman, Taylor (Cody) Schafer and Lyndsey (Christopher) Barnes; 12 great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother-in-law, Dean (Cindy) Palmer; sister-in-law, Dana Palmer; and son-in-law, Tom Cline
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Patricia Ackerman; daughter, Amy Cline; grandson, TJ Cline; son-in-law, David Coover; and brother-in-law, Larry Palmer.
The family would like to thank Chief Ken Justus and the Madison Township Fire Department for their support.
The Ackerman family will receive guests from 5:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street. Rev. Dr. Rich Rader will officiate the memorial service on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Mayflower Congregational Church, 548 North McElroy Rd., Mansfield, OH 44905. Philip will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park. Contributions in Phil’s memory may be made to the Mayflower Congregational Church, 548 N. McElroy Rd., Mansfield, OH 44905.
