Obituary
MANSFIELD: Betty Jean (Stutz) Payton Jones, 90, of Mansfield, passed away Wednesday August 16, 2023 at OhioHealth Hospital following an extended illness.
The daughter of Clark and Christine (Hornung) Stutz, Betty was born in Mansfield on February 1, 1933 and graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1951. She lived in Mansfield all her life, except for one year spent in Austin, TX, in 1972.
An excellent secretary, Betty was especially proud of her shorthand abilities. She held many secretarial positions in her life, including stints at Ohio Edison, Akron, OH, early in her career, and later, at Maxwell Industrial Supply and Bradford Adjustment Services. She retired from Northeast Adjustment Services, Mansfield, OH.
She enjoyed traveling and loved vacationing on sun-filled beaches. Betty loved flowers and blue skies, and enjoyed the beauty of nature. She loved visiting with family and friends and was often known as a social butterfly. She never met a stranger, and loved everyone she knew.
She is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Patricia) Payton of Madison, NJ; Timothy (Angela) Payton; and Julie (Scott) Baker of Mansfield, OH, Grandchildren George (Rebekah) Payton of Olive Hill, KY; Zachary (Jennifer) Braum, of Palmer AK; Mackenzie (Brynna Bargfield) Braum of St. Paul, MN; and Chengli Payton of Madison, NJ, Great-grandchildren C.J., Carter and Mallie Payton of Olive Hill, KY.
Betty was a kind soul, a beautiful lady and was extremely loved and cherished by everyone who knew her. Betty had a lifelong friend, Donna Wells of Mansfield, and another special friend, Joan Landry, in Australia. She also treasured members of the Jones family Dave and Jan Jones, with their children Laura (Bob) Hulec, Michael (Julia) Jones, and grandchildren Lillian Jones, and Eva Jones, and Deb and her late husband Jim Helmer, with their children Jeffrey Helmer, Sarah Helmer, and grandchild Emma Helmer. She loved her dear friends and “family” at Liberty Nursing Center that she called home the last six years due to health complications. Always popular with staff and residents, she enjoyed attending events, activities, and just visiting throughout each day. She could often be found playing Scrabble and other games with Jeffrey Whitmeyer and Pamela Henney, who both provided hours of companionship for Betty.
Along with her parents, Betty was preceded in death by Ralph Payton, father of her children; and her second husband, Rees Jones.
Funeral services will begin Tuesday August 22, 2023 at 12 noon at the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Homes, where calling hours will begin two hours prior, from 10 am-12 pm. Father Joe L. Ashby will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
The service for Betty will be live-streamed through the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Homes Facebook Page beginning at 12 pm. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Liberty Nursing Center (Activities Department).
