Jeannine “Jan” L. (Altman) Weber Cross, 88, of Mansfield, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 14, 2021.
Proverbs 3: 5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”. She is absent from the body and present with the Lord. Her parents were Charles and Hazel (Moses) Altman who are deceased. Jeannine was born on April 10, 1933. She went to Butler High School from the 8th through the 11th grades while living in Newville, Ohio. At Butler High School she was head majorette, baton teacher, class officer, Glee Club officer, office assistant, and softball captain. She was also in the class play, served on the Beacon staff, played the piano for the Senior Ensemble and sang in the choir and mixed chorus.
Her parents moved back to Mansfield in 1951, her senior year. During the last half of her senior year at Mansfield Senior High, she worked at the Mansfield Board of Education part-time, then full-time as Assistant Secretary to the business manager until her marriage and first child. She worked as a secretary for Dr. J. Harrold King in 1963. Jeannine was married to Dave Weber for 31 years. He is the father of their five children.
From 1979-1981, Jeannine spent her two weeks’ vacation traveling with the Festival of Praise Team, a professional group called The Spurrlows. Singing in a different church each night, the group traveled throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Michigan, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Ohio. She also sang in the Billy Graham Crusades in Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1993 Jeannine retired from the Sprint/United Telephone Company and was a cancer survivor that same year. In 1984, Jeannine met Earl Cross, her “Knight in Shining Armor”. She called him “Earl the Pearl” because he was a real gem. They were married in the Marion Avenue Grace Brethren Church and most of their nine children were able to be in the wedding. She and Earl loved to travel, go on bus trips, dine out, fish on their boat at Lake Erie, read Christian books, and do scrapbooking. In 1986, a highlight of their travels was a trip to see her son, Eric Weber, who was serving with the U.S. Army in Germany. The 10-day European Vacation included seeing the sites of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Paris, France. They were invited to stay in the home of a German couple who were cousins of Jeannine’s employer, Bill Plieninger, from the Phone Company. There were dozens of picnics, Christmas parties and gatherings at the Cross home over the years. Jeannine enjoyed entertaining and loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was also a land lady most of her adult life. Jeannine and Earl had over 27 wonderful years together. He passed away July 4, 2011.
One of Jeannine’s special joys was sharing her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with others. Her faith was very strong and she overcame many obstacles in her life. She was a member of Berean Baptist Church and served as a choir member, prepared food for funerals, was a greeter, a member of Healing Hearts and visited people in the nursing homes and shut-ins in their homes.
Jeannine is survived by her five children, Jeff (Dee) Weber of Miami, Florida, Joel Weber of Northville, Michigan, Vic Weber of Columbus, Ohio, Valerie Stevens of Worthington, Ohio, and Eric (Anita) Weber of Crestline, Ohio; grandchildren, Zachery (Ashley), Jacob, Scott, and Kelly Weber, Lindsey (Cody) Dowden, Jeff Weber, Stefanie and Carlie Stevens, Rachael and Nichole Weber, and Chelsea (Max) Nixon; great-grandchildren, Vanessa Carroll, Kaden, Paisley, and Lincoln Lewis, Zoe and Harry Weber, and Vallen Rue Nixon; and several special cousins and very close friends.
