Obituary
Horst Konczak, 84, passed away Monday, January 5, 2009, at Crystal Care Center of Ashland following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born on January 8, 1924, in Breslau, Germany to Reinhold and Margaret Konczak. Horst and his wife, Theresa, arrived in the U.S. in 1952 with their son, Hans. Horst was a loving husband and father, raising five boys in a wonderful little house on Laver Road. Family day outings at Kingwood Center, camping and fishing at Charles Mill Lake were only a few of the things he enjoyed doing with his family. He was an artist by nature; enjoyed painting, photography, and his last endeavor was woodcarving. Horst was a lifelong employee of General Motors in Ontario as a tool and die maker. He was also a diving coach and diving judge at Shelly Acres Swim Club. During his life in Germany, Horst served in the Air Force after becoming a tool and die tradesman. He always loved planes and often visited the air shows at Mansfield Lahm Airport.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa Heigl Konczak, who also resides at Crystal Care Center in Ashland; five sons, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Konczak of Texas, Mr. Henry Konczak of Canton, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Konczak of Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Konczak of Ohio and Mr. Fred Konczak of Texas; ten grandchildren, Randy Johnson, Billy Jo Konczak, Darren Konczak, Anna Konczak, Franz Konczak, Jessica Konczak, Christin Konczak, Margaret Konczak, Natalie Rader, and Sarah Konczak; three great-grandchildren, Cameron, Jillian and Jacquelin Johnson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Kate Konczak and her three children, all of Berlin, Germany; niece, Dorothea and her family in Teltow, Germany; nephew, Ferdinand and his family, all of Spain; nephew, Bernhard and his family in Dusseldorf, Germany; niece, Angelica; and nephew, Peter. Horst was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Seigfried, and sisters, Waldtraud, Ruth and Liselotte.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Grace Street, Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Crystal Care Activity Dept. 1251 East Main St. Ashland, OH, 44805.
