Obituary
COLUMBUS: David Donald Spayde, age 81, of Country Court Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon, passed away August 14, 2020, in OSU Medical Center following complications of a short illness.
He was born March 25, 1939, in Mansfield the firstborn of parents Donald C. & Mary (Baughman) Spayde. He was a 1957 graduate of Mansfield Senior High and then attended Miami University at Oxford. Dave was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity of Chicago.
David was a hardworking entrepreneur and in his lifetime he had three successful businesses. He owned Valley View Nursery—a wholesale nursery and tree farm—where he passed his love of horticulture and the value of hard work on to his three kids. In Mansfield, he also founded McClean Trucking on Illinois Avenue and drove all over the US delivering items from his nursery. Dave was also a skilled craftsman and woodworker. He owned and operated The Dollhouse Factory where he created beautiful and intricate dollhouses for many families and was even employed by Disney to create some truly magical dollhouses.
Dave never met a stranger. He always had a story to tell and loved to talk on the phone. He enjoyed all green growing things and had a huge love of the outdoors. Some of Dave’s favorite memories were made traveling to the Caribbean and all over the United States. Above all, he dearly loved his grandchildren and was a living example of the phrase “Never give up.”
He is survived by his children (& their spouses): Mark & Tammi Spayde of Lewis Center, Suzanne & Robert Sproule of Lewis Center, John Spayde of Dublin; five grandchildren: Alexandra Spayde, Steven Spayde, William Sproule, Caroline Sproule, and Gabriel Sproule; his sister and brother-in-law Rebecca & William Banks of Mansfield; his brother and sister-in-law Daniel & Carol Spayde of Nashville, TN; the mother of his children Anna & Marvin Weidemeyer of Mansfield; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by an infant sister Mary Ruth Spayde.
Although no public service will be held in David’s memory, his family hopes you will remember him in your own special way. A small family service will be held at Snyder Funeral Homes (2553 Lexington Avenue in Mansfield) officiated by Dr. Ed Bernard with burial following in Mansfield Memorial Park.
