John Lester Garber, age 89, peacefully passed away Friday, March 5, 2021, at OhioHealth Hospital in Mansfield. His family wishes to thank his compassionate caregivers Catie, Jean, Bethany, and Grace.
John was born January 24, 1932, in Mansfield, the son of Lester & Francis (Maude) Garber. He met Phyllis Ann Sherman whom he married November 4, 1954. Phyllis was a tireless helpmate to John and she worked many odd jobs to help him build the family business: John L. Garber Materials, Inc. which he founded in 1967. They celebrated 31 years of marriage before she passed away December 4, 1985.
As owner and operator of John L. Garber Materials, Inc., John was hardworking and dedicated to his clients. He could talk about gravel for hours and hours. His business was his main focus and he finally retired in 2019. He was kind-hearted, generous, and loved his family. John liked to grow vegetables—especially hot peppers, and he added them to all of his favorite meals.
John was a member of the Moose and Elks Lodges in Lexington, the American Legion, the Lexington VFW, and was a 68 year member of Masonic Lodge #376 in Bellville as a Worshipful Bruder. John met Lydia (Schirdewahn) Allen and the pair married March 24, 1994 and the couple enjoyed 26 years together before her passing on May 7, 2020.
He is survived by two sons: Matt Garber (Connie) of Lexington and John A. Garber (Eileen) of Bellville; grandchildren Jason Garber (Natley) and Dustin Garber (Sonya Skal); great-grandchildren Hollie & Nicholas; and sister Jane Beasley.
In addition to his parents and wives Phyllis and Lydia, he was preceded in death by his beloved grandson Brian Garber in 2014; great-granddaughter Charlotte Garber; brothers Larry Garber and Jim Garber; sister Ruth Ann Garber; and mother of his son John, Mary Levingston.
His family will receive friends 1:00 – 3:00 and 5:00 – 7:00 PM Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Snyder Funeral Homes (2553 Lexington Ave in Mansfield) where John’s funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday. Celebrant Jerry Wilson will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park cemetery in Ontario where he will be laid to rest beside Phyllis.
