Robert M. Lamb, Jr., age 94 of Mansfield, passed away on Thursday, Dec 9, 2021 at the Arbors of Mifflin in Mansfield, 10 weeks after the passing of his beloved wife Suzy. He was born on May 26, 1927 in Mansfield, the son of Robert Sr. & Adeline (Ernst) Lamb.
Bob was a graduate of Mansfield Senior High and earned his bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He had a lifelong love of airplanes, NASA, and the space program. During the Korean War, he joined the Army Air Corps as a test engineer stationed in North Carolina and was proud to serve his country. Upon returning, Bob began his career with Piasecki Helicopter where he engineered the landing gear on the H-21 helicopter. His father (president of Tappan) convinced him to join the team at Tappan where Bob was instrumental in a number of innovations (including the microwave with his brother Tom) and worked on patent law and product liability. He retired after 38 years.
On August 21, 1954, he married Susan Marshall and together they had four children. Bob was a Stephen Minister and an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church for decades and became a member of Resurrection Parish when the family moved closer to Lexington. He was civically minded and served as a past President of the Mansfield Rotary Club, Chairman of the YMCA, and was a member of Toastmasters.
In younger years, Bob was a recreational pilot and transitioned to radio controlled planes and rockets later in life. Bob and Suzy spent the warm summer months boating on Charles Mill Lake on their pontoon boat. Bob liked a sharp #2 pencil with a good eraser—perfect for solving crossword puzzles daily. He had many hidden talents including writing humorous stories about real life events. He was a drummer for the Royal Scott Highlanders. Bob was an engineer first, last, and always—his family can still hear him ask “What’s the plan?” and they will miss his sharp and witty sense of humor.
He is survived by children Robert Lamb III (Karen) of Beverly Hills, MI, Nancy Lamb (Dan Denslow) of Mansfield, Laura Kohler (Vitali Chadrine) of Palmetto, FL, and David Lamb (Kym) of Lexington; grandchildren Robert Lamb IV, Cotter Lamb, Kathryn Lamb, Megan Chete (Joe), Christian Lamb, Adeline Lamb, and Jonathan Lamb; one great-grandson; sisters-in-law Bonnie Lamb of Montrose, CO, Pat Marshall of Cincinnati, and Helen Marshall of Mansfield; brothers-in-law Clarence Smith of Norwalk and Ralph Bonanata of Bloomfield Village, MI; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob will be welcomed into Heaven with open arms by his wife of 67 years, Suzy Lamb, his brother John Thomas “Tom” Lamb, and his parents.
A Funeral Mass will be held 1:00 PM Friday, December 17, 2021, at Resurrection Parish, 2600 Lexington Ave, Mansfield, OH 44904. Father Matthew Frisbee will celebrate the Mass and private urn burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
Contributions in his memory may be sent to Msgr. Edward C. Dunn Foundation, 104 W First St, Mansfield, OH 44902, or brought to the Mass.
