Location: B - 202 - 2
Obituary
Morris “Marty” Elias entered eternal peace at his home on October 19, 2021, at the age of 87. The son of Isadore and Regina Elias, Marty was born in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from James Madison High School in Brooklyn, and began his college education at Brooklyn College. He graduated from New York University with a B.S. in Physical Education. He earned a Master’s Degree from LaVerne College.
Coming to Mansfield, Ohio in 1965, he began his 30 year teaching career in the Mansfield City School system. Affectionately known as “Mr. E,” he worked with children at various elementary schools, as well as Appleseed Junior High. He also coached the Malabar High School boys’ tennis team for 15 years. Although he was infamous for getting lost enroute to almost every away-tennis match, he successfully guided the team to the state final championships twice. He was an avid tennis player himself, winning the News Journal Tournament trophy with his doubles partner.
Always friendly and outgoing, Marty knew no strangers. He warmly and enthusiastically welcomed everyone. Children and animals were drawn to his kind, fun, Peter-Pan-like personality. During retirement, if he wasn’t walking for miles across Mansfield with his dogs, and sometimes his neighbors’ dogs as well, he could often be found in middle schools, where he was invited to give presentations, sharing his passion for the history of Pearl Harbor and WWII, complete with model war planes and ships he had built.
Marty is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Bonnie (Fillweber) Elias, his loving daughter Carrie Elias, stepdaughter Susan (Ludwig) Haas, stepson Donald Ludwig, step grandchildren Hannah and Paul Haas, his sister Gladys, and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Victor, Sol and Samuel (Bill).
Memorial donations in honor of Marty may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio or the Richland County Humane Society.
Calling hours will be at Snyder Funeral Home, Marion Avenue, Mansfield, on Friday, October 22, 2021 from 5-7 pm. The family kindly requests that all visitors wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status. A graveside funeral will be held at Mansfield Memorial Park, Park Avenue West, Ontario, Ohio, on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 11 am.
