Obituary
Richard R. Fowler died at home on 08/13/2022 after a long life. He was 94 years of age. Richard was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 30th, 1928 to parents Richard R. Fowler, Sr. and Agnes B. Fowler. Before he was ready for college Richard had lived in six cities, including Pittsburgh, PA and Cincinnati, OH. Richard graduated from Devilbiss High School in Toledo, Ohio in 1946.
Richard was an avid athlete and sports fan. He started playing tennis at the age of 6. He called the lines in a tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Don Budge. He was the youngest person to ever enter the greater Cincinnati indoor badminton tournament at the age of 11. He won the junior tennis match in Toledo at the age of 18.
After graduating high school Richard enlisted in the US Marine Corp for two years in the
occupation of China, serving on Guam, Saipan and Pagan. After his discharge from
the service Richard returned to Toledo and that fall he entered college at The Ohio State University. He received both his BS and LLB degrees in March 1953. At Ohio State he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and played on the Ohio State Tennis Team.
On May 23rd 1953 he married Miriam "Snookie" Hudson, of Toledo, who also graduated from The Ohio University in 1953. They moved to Mansfield, where they raised their three children.
Early in his legal career, Richard served as Mansfield City Assistant City Solicitor, serving from 1956 to 1958 under Robert Mabee City Solicitor. In 1958 he entered the Practice of Law with the law firm Weldon, Huston & Keyser as a partner where he practiced for 50 years until his retirement.
During his lifetime Richard was one of the original trustees of the Mansfield S.W. Little League, helping develop the ball park at Sterkel Field. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, University Club, Owls, and Westbrook County Club. He was a very good gardener, specializing in tomatoes. Richard closely followed the Pittsburgh Pirates in baseball and the Cleveland Browns in football and was an enthusiastic Ohio State football fan. He attended all of the 1960 World Series games between the Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Yankees and the championship game of the Cleveland Browns in 1964. He was a past President of the Richland County Bar Association and recently received the Honor, by The Ohio State Bar Association, for 65 years of service as an attorney.
In addition to his parents, and his sister Anne, Richard is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Miriam. Richard is survived by his daughter Cathie DeLong, sons Jim (Tracy) Fowler and David Fowler, grandchildren Zachary DeLong, Hannah (Kendra) DeLong and Ryan Fowler, great-granddaughters, Claire DeLong and Emma Spore and by his sister Leslie May.
Richard’s family would like to thank the caregivers at Freedom Caregivers and Kindred Hospice whose excellent care allowed him to remain at home.
A small service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 10:00 AM with calling hours the hour prior at the Marion Avenue Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes officiated by The Reverend Joe Ashby of Grace Episcopal Church, followed by interment at Mansfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard’s memory may be made to the Humane Society at Richland County.
