Mansfield: Hazel L. Shay, age 93, of Mansfield passed away peacefully with her family by her side Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Wedgewood Estates.
She was born September 22, 1929 in Wilkinsburg, PA to the late Kenneth and Ruth (Spahman) Donelson.
Hazel graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1947 and later from Ashland College. She taught for over 30 years, most of her time being at Wooster Heights teaching elementary school students. She attended Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Mansfield. Hazel had numerous interests including collecting spoons from her travels, knitting, including argyle socks and washcloths, paper dolls and breeding and raising dogs. She enjoyed meeting her former teacher friends and having lunch with them.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Shirlee (Randy) Schoenman, Pamela Hunt and David (Cynthia) Twitchell, 15 grandchildren Greg (Lyn) Schoenman, Betsy Koestler, Julee (Don) Sims, Russell (Jenny) Hunt, Elizabeth (Brad Ewing) Hunt, Allison (Dan) Weise, Andrea (Andrew) Ross, Shaina Hunt, Deanna (Steven Cox) Hunt, Rebecca (Dieter) Smiley, Zach Hunt, Chris Hunt, Carly Hunt, Warren Twitchell, and Kayla Twitchell, 12 great-grandchildren, a brother Ken (Monta) Donelson and a sister Kay Vandlik.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Tom Shay.
The family will have private services at this time, and Hazel will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park.
Donations in honor of Hazel may be made to the Diana Wilkinson Memorial Fund which provides tutors to students in the Mansfield City School District.
