Obituary
Wanda J. Yellen, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother died peacefully Monday, February 27, 2023 at the age of 97.
She was born on July 31, 1925 in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Mortimer and Daisy (Hensley) Keyes. On June 19, 1952, Wanda married Sid Yellen in Mansfield, Ohio where they remained for their 56 years of marriage. Together Wanda and Sid shared many adventures rich with travel to places throughout the world and those closer to home, New England being a favorite. They were both avid golfers and were fortunate to play at some of the most beautiful courses.
Wanda and Sid valued hard work and opportunity and together created successful businesses most notably Sid’s Camera Shop, a landmark in Mansfield for 46 years. Wanda filled her life with work that she enjoyed and valued. Most recently, she was the volunteer coordinator for the Mansfield Art Center, an association that she developed for nearly 40 years. Wanda and Sid worked side by side at the camera shop every day for its existence and they also owned and co-operated Plaza Lanes bowling alley in Marion, Ohio. Wanda was quite the bowling instructor! Before beginning her life with Sid, Wanda worked at the Mansfield News Journal, a job she started in 1945. Wanda valued her time as a volunteer with Richland Newhope many years ago.
One of Wanda’s proudest moments was becoming a grandmother. She enjoyed her role as “Maui”. Wanda was kind and compassionate to all animals allowing her daughters to bring home and rehabilitate any animal in need, a legacy that she continues to pass on through the generations.
Wanda is survived by daughters Ivy Yellen and Lisa Yellen, granddaughter Anya Yellen, special family member GeorgiAnn Diniaco, nieces and nephews in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Cleveland, Ohio.
Wanda leaves behind a world of friends that loved her especially those at the Mansfield Art Center and the Athens Greek Restaurant. She will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched especially Gregg Thatcher, Connie Ernsberger, and Jackie Walker who gave their love and support when she needed them most.
It is difficult to fully capture a life well-lived. Wanda appreciated both the small and the most significant things in life with a grace and style of her own. We will always remember Wanda’s feisty spirit, beautiful smile, and loving heart. She was truly special and will remain in our hearts forever.
